MY STEPFATHER BRUTALLY ATTACKED MY DISABLED SISTER, BUT HE NEVER EXPECTED WHAT I WOULD UNCOVER NEXT
Chapter 2 / 4

Chapter 2

PART 2 - I ARRIVED HOME AND FOUND THE EVIDENCE THEY THOUGHT I WOULD IGNORE

351 words

By the time I reached the house where we had grown up, the ambulance was already gone.

My mother was standing in the doorway wearing a silk robe.

She looked completely dry.

Completely calm.

And, more than anything, irritated.

“It’s just a minor scratch,” she said.

I stared at her.

Behind her, Jonah was leaning casually against the kitchen counter, drinking bourbon as though nothing had happened.

Then I noticed the refrigerator.

There was bl00d smeared across the handle.

The metal door was dented inward at roughly the height of Chloe’s head.

Jonah followed my gaze.

“She’s dramatic,” he said. “She always has been.”

I looked back at my mother.

“Where is she?”

“Hospital,” Mother answered dismissively. “They’re wasting everyone’s time.”

Jonah gave a mocking smile.

“You drove five hours over a bl00dy nose?”

For one terrible second, I imagined smashing the glass in his hand against his teeth.

Instead, I took off my soaked coat, folded it neatly over a chair, and faced him.

“Tell me

exactly what happened.”

Jonah laughed.

That was his first mistake.

He had mistaken my calmness for surrender.

He did not realize that while he was talking, I was memorizing every inconsistency in his story. I photographed the bl00d on the refrigerator. I studied the damage to the door. I watched my mother stand behind the man who had nearly ki:lle:d her own daughter and defend him without hesitation.

I had arrived home as Chloe’s sister.

By sunrise, I intended to become the witness neither of them would ever be able to silence.

My mother repeated the same story.

Chloe had slipped.

Jonah claimed he had tried to catch her.

I let them continue.

I did not interrupt.

Instead, I asked small, seemingly harmless questions.

“Where exactly were you standing?”

“Which hand were you using when you grabbed her?”

“Why is the refrigerator dented inward?”

Jonah’s expression slowly changed.

His smile

became thinner.

“What are you, a cop now?”

“No,” I replied.

I looked directly at him.

“Something more useful.”
