MY STEPFATHER BRUTALLY ATTACKED MY DISABLED SISTER, BUT HE NEVER EXPECTED WHAT I WOULD UNCOVER NEXT
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

PART 1 - THE NIGHT MY SISTER CALLED ME AFTER JONAH FINALLY CROSSED THE LINE

317 words

My stepfather s:lamm:ed my disabled sister into the refrigerator before driving his knee into her, br:eaking her nose.

Covered in bl00d and shaking uncontrollably, she crawled across the floor to reach her phone and call me. I drove five hours through a violent storm to get to her. My mother only shrugged and said, “It’s just a minor scratch.” What happened after that... still follows me to this day.

My sister’s scream ended with the sickening sound of her s:kull hi:tti:ng metal. Five hours away, I stared at my phone after the call suddenly went d:ea:d. Before anyone could explain what had happened, I already knew Jonah had finally crossed a line he could never uncross.

Chloe had cerebral palsy and relied on forearm crutches to walk. At twenty-six, she was intelligent, fiercely stubborn, and far too proud to admit when something frightened her.

For months, she had called me with one excuse after another.

“I bumped into the counter.”

“I slipped in the bathroom.”

“Jonah gets loud

sometimes, but he doesn’t mean anything by it.”

I had wanted to believe her.

That night, however, her voice was barely more than a whisper.

“Karina, he sh0ved me into the refrigerator.”

Then I heard our stepfather in the background.

“Who are you calling?”

A violent crash followed.

Chloe gasped.

Jonah swore.

Then came a wet, ch0king sob that made my stomach twist.

“He kn:eed me,” she managed to say. “My nose...”

The connection suddenly cut out.

I was already grabbing my keys.

The storm outside was so severe that parts of the highway seemed to disappear beneath curtains of rain. Gusts of wind pushed my car sideways, while lightning flashed across the open fields beside the road.

I kept both hands locked around the steering wheel.

First, I called 911.

Then I called the county sheriff.

Finally, I dialed a number I had not contacted in six years.
