MY STEPFATHER BRUTALLY ATTACKED MY DISABLED SISTER, BUT HE NEVER EXPECTED WHAT I WOULD UNCOVER NEXT
Chapter 3 / 4

Chapter 3

PART 3 - THE JOB I NEVER TOLD THEM ABOUT CHANGED EVERYTHING BEFORE SUNRISE

326 words

Neither of them knew what I had actually been doing for the past eight years.

They did not know I worked as a senior investigator for the state attorney general’s Medicaid Fraud and Vulnerable Adults Unit.

And they certainly did not know that Chloe’s care was being paid for by the state.

That meant the injuries they were trying to dismiss were not simply a private family matter.

They had just made themselves the subject of an investigation they had no idea was coming.

I left the house without another word.

The smell of bourbon and bleach clung to my clothes all the way to the hospital.

By the time I reached the emergency department, Chloe had already undergone a CT scan.

Her face was swollen beyond recognition.

Purple bruises spread beneath both eyes.

A splint held her broken nose in place.

When she saw me, she tried to smile.

Instead, she winced.

"I knew you'd come," she whispered.

I squeezed her hand carefully.

"You

never have to face him again."

The attending physician stepped quietly into the room.

He closed the chart before speaking.

"This isn't consistent with a simple fall."

He pointed toward the scans.

"There are injuries at different stages of healing."

My heart sank.

Different stages.

Not one attack.

Many.

Chloe lowered her eyes.

"I didn't want Mom to be alone."

"You were protecting her?" I asked.

She nodded weakly.

"I thought... if I kept making excuses... maybe he'd stop."

The doctor looked directly at me.

"I've already documented everything."

"So have I," I answered.

Within minutes, two sheriff's deputies arrived to take Chloe's statement.

She hesitated only once.

Then she told them everything.

The refrigerator.

The knee to her face.

The months of threats.

The names of neighbors who had heard screaming but never intervened.

Each sentence chipped away at Jonah's carefully built version of events.
