Chapter 4

PART 4 - THE DEAD MAN WAITING FOR HIS SON

847 words

Then Victoria collapsed.

Blood spread across her white blouse.

Julian stood above her, staring at the gun in his hand.

“Mom?”

His voice sounded six years old.

Victoria looked down at herself.

Then up at him.

“You idiot.”

Sirens erupted outside.

Julian looked at me.

“You called them?”

“No.”

Red lights flashed through the loading bay.

Vehicles surrounded the warehouse.

Black tactical uniforms poured through every entrance.

Federal agents.

Military investigators.

And at their center walked Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Vale.

My stomach dropped.

Vale entered slowly, weapon holstered, expression grim.

“Captain Mercer.”

I stared at him.

He looked exactly as he had when presenting my medal that afternoon.

Controlled.

Professional.

Untouchable.

He glanced at Victoria bleeding on the floor.

Then at Julian.

Then Maya.

“Everybody lower your weapons.”

Julian released the pistol instantly.

Agents restrained him.

Others moved toward the contractors.

One cut Lena free.

I stepped toward Vale.

“You tried to have

me killed.”

His expression did not change.

“Who told you that?”

“I saw the recording.”

For the first time, something flickered in his eyes.

Victoria began laughing.

Weakly.

Blood touched her teeth.

“Show him,” she whispered.

Vale looked down at her.

“Victoria.”

“Show him.”

I stared between them.

“Show me what?”

Vale sighed.

Then reached inside his coat.

Agents around us tensed.

But he withdrew only a thin black envelope.

He handed it to me.

Inside was a photograph.

My father.

Alive.

Not twelve years ago.

Six months ago.

The date was printed at the bottom.

The photograph showed him standing outside a building somewhere in Europe.

Older.

Gray-haired.

But unmistakable.

My hands went numb.

“This is fake.”

Maya came beside me.

“Daniel…”

“My father is dead.”

Vale said quietly, “No.”

I looked at Victoria.

She closed her eyes.

“You buried him.”

“No.”

“I went to his funeral.”

“You went

to an empty coffin.”

The floor beneath me seemed to tilt.

Every childhood memory returned at once.

My father teaching me to drive.

His hand on my shoulder at graduation.

The last argument we ever had.

The phone call telling me he had died.

The closed casket.

Victoria crying without tears.

“Why?”

My voice barely existed.

Victoria opened her eyes.

“Because your father was not the man you thought he was.”

Vale reached for the photograph.

I pulled it away.

“Don’t touch it.”

He lowered his hand.

“Your father disappeared after uncovering a procurement network operating through military logistics contracts. He staged his death to protect you.”

“Protect me?”

My laugh sounded broken.

“You sent me into an ambush.”

“No.”

“You opened my casualty record forty-eight hours before the attack.”

Vale looked genuinely surprised.

“I did no such thing.”

“Aaron traced your credentials.”

His face changed.

“Captain Cole told you

that?”

“Yes.”

Vale stepped closer.

“Where is Cole now?”

I hesitated.

He had left my house three hours earlier.

He said he was returning to headquarters.

“I don’t know.”

Vale pulled out his phone and showed me a security image.

Aaron.

Entering a restricted server room.

Timestamped twenty-three minutes ago.

Then another photograph.

Aaron meeting Victoria outside a courthouse four months earlier.

My chest tightened.

“No.”

Victoria smiled from the floor.

“There you are.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“The moment you finally understand.”

Vale spoke quietly.

“Your mother was laundering your father’s assets. Julian helped her seize the company. But the military leak—the altered deployment, the casualty record, the convoy route—that came from someone else.”

My phone vibrated.

A message.

Aaron.

I opened it.

One sentence.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED DEAD.

Then every light in the warehouse went out.

Gunfire erupted outside.

Agents shouted.

Glass shattered.

Someone grabbed Maya.

I heard her scream my name.

I lunged toward the sound.

A body slammed into me.

I hit the concrete.

Emergency lights flickered red.

Through the chaos, I saw a shadow dragging Maya toward a side exit.

“Maya!”

I ran.

Vale shouted behind me.

“Mercer, stop!”

I ignored him.

The side door burst open.

Cold air struck my face.

A black SUV waited twenty yards away.

The figure shoved Maya inside.

For one second, the interior light illuminated his face.

Aaron Cole.

My closest friend.

My brother in everything but blood.

He looked directly at me.

Then smiled.

The SUV accelerated away.

I raised my weapon but could not fire without risking Maya.

Behind me, Victoria screamed.

Not from pain.

Fear.

I turned.

She had pushed herself upright against the loading bay wall.

Her face had gone completely white.

“He found her,” she whispered.

Vale crouched beside her.

“Who?”

Victoria stared at the disappearing SUV.

Then she looked at me.

For the first time in my life, my mother seemed genuinely terrified.

“Your father.”

My blood froze.

“What are you talking about?”

She grabbed my sleeve with surprising strength.

“Cole doesn’t work for me.”

“Then who does he work for?”

Victoria’s fingers tightened.

Her answer came in a whisper.

“Your father.”

Outside, the SUV vanished into the darkness.

And somewhere inside it, Maya was being taken toward a dead man who had spent twelve years waiting for his son to come home.

THE END.
