Chapter 3 / 4

Chapter 3

PART 3 - THE THIRTY-MILLION-DOLLAR SECRET

877 words

The warehouse appeared beyond the highway like a black block against the night.

Julian’s new company logo hung over the loading dock.

Our old company name had been stripped away.

MAYA & DANIEL FREIGHT SOLUTIONS had once been painted there in blue letters.

I remembered the day we opened.

Maya stood on a ladder painting the second line herself because we couldn’t afford a proper sign.

She had blue paint in her hair for three days.

Now there was only JULIAN GLOBAL LOGISTICS.

He had put his own name on our grave.

We parked.

The loading bay door stood open.

Inside, one row of overhead lights burned.

Julian waited beside a folding table.

Victoria sat in a chair.

Lena was tied to another.

Her lip was split.

One eye swollen.

But alive.

Beside her stood two men I did not recognize.

Security contractors.

Former military from the way they held themselves.

Julian smiled when he saw me.

Then he looked at Maya.

His

smile changed.

I noticed.

So did she.

For half a second she stopped walking.

I moved slightly in front of her.

Julian laughed.

“Still pretending to be the hero?”

“Still wearing my watch?”

He glanced at his wrist.

“Not yours anymore.”

Victoria stood.

Pearls again.

Even at midnight in a warehouse.

Some people wore armor made of steel.

My mother’s armor had always been elegance.

“Documents,” she said.

“Lena first.”

“No.”

“Then we’re done.”

I turned.

One of the contractors stepped toward Maya.

I stopped.

“Touch her and nobody gets the encryption key.”

Victoria narrowed her eyes.

I had seen that expression throughout childhood.

At dinners.

At funerals.

At family meetings.

The moment when affection disappeared and calculation took its place.

“You truly believe this is about the company?” she asked.

I looked at Julian.

His grin faded.

“What is it about?”

My mother smiled.

“You.”

The warehouse seemed to

become very quiet.

Victoria walked around the table.

“You were supposed to die overseas.”

Maya inhaled sharply.

Julian stared at the floor.

I said nothing.

Victoria continued.

“When you insisted on marrying Maya, I warned you. When you put her name on the business, I warned you. When your father left assets to you instead of dividing them properly—”

“My father?”

That stopped her.

She realized the mistake.

Too late.

My father had died twelve years earlier.

Heart attack.

At least, that was what I had been told.

“What about Dad?”

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“Nothing.”

Julian muttered, “Mom.”

“Shut up.”

“What did Dad leave me?”

Her silence answered more than words.

I moved closer.

“What did he leave me?”

Victoria glanced toward the contractors.

I saw it.

The signal.

The man nearest Lena reached inside his jacket.

I dropped the folder.

Maya moved before anyone else.

She kicked the folding

table hard.

Its metal edge slammed into the contractor’s knee.

Lena threw herself sideways with the chair.

The second man lunged toward me.

Training took over.

I caught his wrist, drove my shoulder into his chest, and sent him crashing against a pallet.

Julian ran.

Not toward the exit.

Toward Maya.

He grabbed her coat.

She spun and hit him across the mouth with the recorder hidden beneath it.

He roared and raised his hand.

I saw red.

Then Maya shouted, “Daniel, no!”

Not because she was afraid for Julian.

Because she knew what I was about to become.

I stopped myself half a second before driving the man’s head into the concrete.

Instead, I twisted his arm behind him and forced him down.

“Move,” I whispered, “and you lose the shoulder.”

He believed me.

Behind us, Victoria backed toward the loading bay.

A gun appeared in her hand.

Not mine.

A compact pistol.

She pointed it at Maya.

Every person froze.

My mother’s voice was perfectly steady.

“Give me the key.”

I slowly reached into my jacket.

“Daniel,” Maya whispered.

Victoria smiled.

“You see? This is why your father always preferred you. Julian was never strong enough.”

Julian stared up from the floor.

Something changed in his face.

Not anger.

Recognition.

“What?” he said.

Victoria ignored him.

“You were supposed to inherit everything,” she continued. “The company holdings. The Virginia land. The offshore accounts.”

I frowned.

“Offshore accounts?”

“Your father hid nearly thirty million dollars.”

Julian stopped breathing.

I almost laughed.

There it was.

The truth underneath everything.

Not family pride.

Not jealousy over my marriage.

Money.

Thirty million dollars.

“And you couldn’t access it,” I said.

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

“Your father designed the trust so only you could authorize release.”

“So you tried to kill me.”

“I tried to correct his mistake.”

Julian pushed himself upright.

“You told me there was eight million.”

Victoria’s eyes flicked toward him.

I saw betrayal hit him in real time.

“You said we split it.”

“This is not the moment.”

“You lied to me.”

She turned the gun slightly.

That was all I needed.

I pulled the evidence token from my jacket and threw it toward the far corner.

Victoria instinctively looked.

I moved.

So did Julian.

He grabbed her wrist.

The gun fired.

The warehouse exploded with sound.

Maya screamed.

For one terrible second I thought she had been hit.
