MY MOTHER CALLED THE POLICE ON MY FIVE-YEAR-OLD, THEN TRIED TO TAKE HER FROM ME
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

PART 1 - THE DAY MY FAMILY USED THE POLICE TO TERRIFY MY FIVE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER

582 words

“Take her away so she learns her lesson!” my mother shouted, pointing at my five-year-old daughter while two police officers stood in the middle of my living room.

I had returned from San Diego a day early because my client canceled our final meeting. I caught the first flight back to Phoenix, planning to surprise Maisie with chocolate sweet rolls for breakfast. But when I opened the door to my apartment in Arcadia, I found my little girl curled up on the couch, crying without making a sound, as if even her tears might get her into more trouble.

My mother, Beverly, stood with her arms crossed. My sister, Joanna, held her four-year-old daughter, Harper, who was pretending to cry while eating a cookie. One of the officers was kneeling in front of Maisie, gently explaining that no one was going to take her away.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

The officer stood up.

“We received a report about an altercation between two children. We were told you were out of town.”

I looked at my mother.

“You

called the police over a fight between little girls?”

“Maisie pushed Harper,” Joanna replied. “She became aggressive because she wouldn’t let her borrow a doll.”

Maisie finally looked up. Her eyes were swollen.

“Mommy, Grandma said they were going to lock me up.”

Something inside me shattered, but I didn’t raise my voice. I sat beside her and wrapped my arms around her.

The younger officer looked at Beverly with obvious frustration.

“Ma’am, the emergency line is not for terrifying a child over a disagreement about toys. There are no injuries and no grounds for any legal action. If you misuse emergency services like this again, you could face consequences.”

Joanna protested.

“So you’re not even going to put something on her record?”

The officer stared at her in disbelief.

“She’s five years old.”

Before leaving, he walked over to Maisie.

“You’re not a bad little girl. Pushing isn’t okay,

but no one is taking you anywhere. If something upsets you, ask an adult for help.”

The door closed behind them, and my mother waited for an apology.

“You’ve lost your mind,” I said. “You will never be alone with my daughter again.”

Beverly didn’t even blink.

“You spoil her too much. Sooner or later, someone has to teach her some discipline.”

“You terrified her.”

“Maybe that’s how she’ll learn.”

Joanna insisted they had done it “for her own good.” Then Maisie quietly told me that Harper had tried to take away the doll her father had sent her for her birthday, and Grandma had ordered her to hand it over because “Harper knows how to take care of nice things.”

That night, while I washed her hair, Maisie confessed something even worse.

“Grandma said you were ashamed of me... and that maybe you didn’t want to be my mommy

anymore.”

I held her until she fell asleep. Then I opened my banking app and canceled every automatic transfer I had been sending to Beverly and Joanna for years. My mother’s health insurance, my sister’s car loan, the so-called home repairs, and every utility bill I always ended up paying.

I didn’t call them. I didn’t threaten them. I simply pressed Cancel.

Five days later, my mother discovered what I had done.

And when she realized she could no longer control my money, she decided to destroy the one place my daughter still felt safe.

She had no idea what was about to happen.
