MILLIONAIRE FINDS A HUNGRY GIRL AT HIS HOTEL AND UNCOVERS A FOUR-YEAR BETRAYAL
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

PART 1 - THE HUNGRY GIRL WHO EXPOSED A LUXURY HOTEL’S FIRST SECRET

639 words

“If she comes near the entrance again, get her out of here.

This hotel is not a shelter for street children.”

That was the first thing Mason Vance heard as he stepped out of his truck in front of the Grand Crest Hotel in San Antonio.

He had arrived without a driver and without notifying anyone. For months, the restaurant’s expenses had been rising, while fewer and fewer guests were coming back. He wanted to see with his own eyes what was going on.

Near a column, a girl of about thirteen hugged a worn-out backpack. She wore old sneakers, a jacket that was far too thin for the rainy morning, and her hair was tied back with a simple hair tie.

“I wasn’t bothering anyone,” she said. “I only asked if they had any bread left.”

The security guard tried to justify himself.

“Sir, she keeps asking guests for food. It makes the hotel look bad.”

Mason looked at him coldly.

“And you’ve already decided that matters more than finding out why a child is hungry?”

The girl’s name was Lily Parker. She lived with her grandmother in the Southtown neighborhood. Her mother, Joanne, had been hospitalized for weeks after suffering a stroke. Her father had died years earlier.

Mason invited her to have breakfast.

At the restaurant, they served her pancakes, eggs, and a sweet ricotta dish that the menu advertised as “artisan, made with premium dairy products.”

Lily tasted it slowly. Then she put down her fork.

“You don’t like it?” Mason asked.

“It tastes bad.”

The manager nearly choked.

Lily pointed at the plate.

“My mom was a cook. There’s too much flour in this, the cheese tastes cheap, and the cream is sour.”

Mason smiled for the first time.

“You think you can make it better?”

“Yes. But not with what you buy.”

Her answer made him

sit up straight.

With permission and supervision, Lily prepared a small portion using ricotta from a nearby store. The result was so different that Mason asked them to call the executive chef, Brandon Cole.

Brandon walked in looking annoyed.

“Are we really going to let a little girl teach us professional cooking now?”

Mason pushed both plates toward him.

“Try them.”

The chef did and fell silent.

Mason then asked to see the product used that morning. In the cold storage room, he found an inexpensive brand. Yet the invoice listed an artisan dairy product that cost nearly three times as much.

“It was an emergency substitution,” Brandon said. “It arrived last night.”

Lily went pale when she saw the package.

“It didn’t arrive last night.”

Everyone turned toward her.

“My mom took a picture of that exact product months ago.”

The chef stiffened.

“Who is your mother?”

“Joanne Parker.”

Brandon’s expression changed completely.

“She doesn’t work here anymore.”

“Because you forced her to quit,” Lily blurted out, her eyes filling with tears. “My mom said you were buying cheap food and charging the hotel as if it were expensive. She wrote a letter to the owner.”

Mason stopped breathing for a second.

“To me?”

“Yes. And afterward, they told her that you had read it and didn’t care.”

Brandon took a step toward the door.

Mason stopped him.

“Nobody leaves.”

Lily clenched her fists.

“Then they accused my mom of stealing food. She left the job a few days later. Not long after that, she got sick.”

Mason stared at the invoice, the cheap package, and the girl.

Until that morning, he thought he had a quality problem.

Now he was beginning to suspect that someone had been stealing from his own hotel for years.

And the worst part was that they had used his name to destroy a woman who had tried to warn him.

He couldn’t imagine what he was about to discover next.
