AFTER SIX CHILDLESS YEARS, MY HUSBAND LEFT ME—THEN THE LONELY SHERIFF ACROSS THE ROAD CHANGED EVERYTHING
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

PART 1 - THE REPORT SIMON NEVER WANTED ME TO SEE

831 words

The night Simon ended our marriage, he spread my fertility records across the kitchen table as if they were evidence proving I was guilty.

Then he smiled.

“Madelyn is pregnant,” he said while straightening the cuffs of the expensive suit I had helped him pay for. “So I guess we finally know which one of us was the problem.”

For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

For six years, I had gone through injections, surgeries, endless medical appointments, and heartbreaking losses that left me emotionally drained.

Through every one of those years, Simon’s mother kept reminding me that a good wife should be capable of giving her husband children.

Simon had always acted as though he was standing beside me.

He held my hand in clinic waiting rooms.

He kissed my forehead after another treatment failed.

He promised me that no matter what happened, we would get through it together.

Apparently, that promise disappeared the moment his assistant showed him a positive pregnancy test.

Before the sun came up, Simon had emptied our joint bank

account.

He canceled my health insurance.

While I was still at work, he arranged for the locks on our home to be changed.

Later, his attorney sent me an email claiming that I had voluntarily chosen to leave the marriage.

Simon even kept the car because it was registered under his company’s name.

When I came home and discovered I could no longer get inside, he was standing on the porch without a trace of emotion on his face.

“You’ll be fine,” he said. “You’ve always been good at being alone.”

Across the narrow road, someone had witnessed everything.

My neighbor, Gideon Croft, was standing beside his mailbox.

Everyone in Pine Ridge knew him as the withdrawn former sheriff who lived by himself in an old farmhouse with an aging dog and almost never had visitors.

He was tall, with silver beginning to show at his temples, and so quiet

that arrogant people often assumed he was harmless.

After Simon drove away, Gideon crossed the road.

“Do you have somewhere safe to stay tonight?” he asked.

I swallowed my embarrassment.

“I’ll find a motel.”

“No,” he said. “You can stay at my house.”

“I don’t need charity.”

“Good.”

He held my gaze.

“Because I’m not offering you charity.”

Inside his kitchen, Gideon placed three things on the table.

A spare key to his house.

The name of a divorce attorney.

And a sealed envelope from a fertility specialist in Baltimore.

I stared at the three items.

“What is all of this?”

“My late wife spent years being blamed for something that was never her fault,” he said quietly. “It taught me never to automatically believe the person making the loudest accusation.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside was confirmation of a medical appointment.

It had already been scheduled.

And it had

already been paid for.

I looked at him again.

“Why would you do this for me?”

His answer came without hesitation.

“Because Simon lied.”

Then he pushed a photocopied medical report across the table.

I had never seen the document before.

Simon’s name was printed across the top.

My eyes moved down toward the conclusion.

Severe male-factor infertility.

Extremely low probability of natural conception.

My hands began to shake.

For six years, I had believed that my own body was the reason we could never have a child.

I had endured procedure after procedure.

I had carried the shame.

I had listened while Simon’s family quietly treated me as though I had failed as a wife.

And all that time, Simon had apparently known the truth.

I raised my eyes.

“Where did you get this?”

Gideon’s expression became harder.

“Your husband arranged for the original report to disappear with help from someone inside the fertility clinic.”

My stomach twisted.

“How do you know that?”

“Because I kept a copy.”

I stared at him.

“Why would you have access to Simon’s medical report?”

“That clinic administrator was once connected to an investigation.”

“You investigated him?”

Something shifted subtly in Gideon’s expression.

His voice remained calm, but suddenly the quiet man living across the road seemed far more complicated than I had ever imagined.

“I used to investigate a lot of people.”

I looked down at the report again.

That was when everything changed.

Simon thought he had walked away from a broken woman with no money, no home, and no way to fight back.

But he had made one enormous mistake.

He had underestimated the man living across the road.

And what was even worse for Simon, he had left something behind.

Evidence.

I still had no idea how much Gideon actually knew.

But I was beginning to realize that this hidden medical report was only the first piece of the puzzle.

For the first time since my marriage fell apart, I stopped wondering how I was going to survive.

Instead, I started wondering how many other secrets Gideon had kept buried.

And who Gideon Croft really was.
