PART 2 — THE BREAKFAST THEY USED TO TEACH ME SUBMISSION

When I arrived at the estate at dawn, Beatrice was already fully dressed, waiting in the kitchen like a corporate supervisor monitoring a low-level assembly line.

Arthur shuffled in much later, and Julian acted completely normal, while Cynthia remained soundly asleep upstairs like a spoiled princess.

I cooked anyway. I prepared a flawless spinach quiche, thick-cut bacon, roasted potatoes, and fresh fruit, trying desperately to avoid starting my marriage with a declaration of war.

Then, Cynthia finally strolled down the stairs at 6:42 a.m., looked at the spread on the table, and crossed her arms with a deep frown.

“Where is my breakfast?” she asked, looking at me with pure disdain.

I told her politely that I had kept a generous portion warm for her inside the oven so it wouldn’t get cold. Beatrice froze instantly, her expression sharpening.

“This family does not consume reheated leftovers,” Beatrice declared, her jaw tightening as she glared at me. “If Cynthia wakes up later than the rest of us, you stand back up and you cook a fresh meal

for Cynthia.”

Cynthia leaned back against the counter, smirking triumphantly as she watched her mother defend her laziness.

“So I’m supposed to accept the scraps from the table?”

I looked over at Julian, fully expecting him to step in and defend his wife. Instead, he kept his eyes glued to his plate, refusing to meet my gaze as he pushed a piece of potato around with his fork.

That silent cowardice hurt significantly worse than the initial insult from his mother.

Then, Beatrice began a lengthy, condescending lecture about the sacred duties of a wife. She explained that a woman should always think ahead, serve her husband’s bloodline without being explicitly instructed, and not be too proud just because she maintained a successful corporate career.

She told me I shouldn’t bring my “outside career attitude” into her son’s family.

I was a licensed clinical pharmacist who managed controlled substances, massive

insurance disputes, furious hospital patients, and intense inventory audits daily. Yet, in their warped reality, I was deemed too incompetent to survive a family breakfast.

“I didn’t disrespect a single person in this room,” I said carefully, keeping my voice level despite the anger building in my throat. “I woke up before dawn and prepared a hot meal for every individual sitting at this table.”

Beatrice’s face sharpened into a mask of pure malice.

“Are you actually talking back to me in my own dining room?”

Julian slammed his fork down against the wood and turned to me, his voice harsh.

“Clara, stop it right now.”

He didn’t say, “Mom, that’s enough.” He didn’t say, “Cynthia, don’t be rude to my wife.” He didn’t offer a single word of protection. It was just my name, spoken like a stern command to a disobedient pet.

I saw the absolute reality of

my marriage clearly in that exact second. It wasn’t broken; it was simply, finally revealed in the light.

Cynthia pushed her plate away with a heavy sigh.

“Julian, are you absolutely certain you picked the right kind of woman to join this family?”

That was the exact moment Julian stood up from his chair, the wood scraping aggressively against the floorboards. His jaw tightened, and his eyes shifted from an irritated husband into a man desperately trying to prove his dominance in front of his mother.

“Clara,” he said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous growl. “You need to learn exactly when to shut your mouth and listen to your elders.”

“I’m not your corporate employee, Julian,” I replied, standing my ground.

His hand moved before Arthur even lifted his head from his plate, the violent slap cracking heavily across my face.
