PART 4 — The Life Julian Could Never Take Away

The twins were born on a rain-soaked Tuesday in early summer.

Two perfect boys with dark hair and storm-cloud eyes.

We named the older one Elias.

The younger one Noah.

Alexander held them both in the delivery room while the celebrity medical team that had monitored every heartbeat for six months stepped back and gave us the first private moment of their lives.

He looked down at their tiny faces and something inside the hard, locked fortress of him finally cracked open.

I saw it happen.

The man who had buried himself in a quiet town for over a decade let the last of the grief go.

Later, when the room was quiet and the boys slept against my chest, he sat on the edge of the bed and took my hand.

“I never thought I would get this,” he said. His voice was rough. “Not after Elena. Not after everything I became to survive losing her.”

I turned my hand

in his and laced our fingers together the way I had that first stormy night.

“You’re not surviving anymore,” I whispered. “You’re living.”

He leaned down and pressed his forehead to mine.

Outside the rain fell soft against the windows of the private suite.

Somewhere far away, Julian was still trying to claw back the life he had thrown away.

He would fail.

The divorce had been finalized months earlier with a settlement so one-sided his lawyers had gone silent mid-negotiation.

Chloe had left him the moment the truth about his infertility became public.

The company he had built on lies was under federal investigation for the same clinic fraud Garrison had once investigated.

Karma, it turned out, had a long memory and excellent aim.

We did not stay in Boston.

We returned to the farmhouse in Cedar Hollow for the first year.

Alexander kept the name Garrison in town.

The people there still called him Sheriff, even though he had not worn a badge in over a decade.

The old dog lived long enough to meet the boys and then passed quietly one autumn morning with his head in Alexander’s lap.

We buried him under the oak tree behind the house.

Life settled into something I had never allowed myself to want.

Quiet mornings.

Small hands reaching for me.

A man who looked at me like I was the only solid thing in a world that had once tried to break us both.

On the twins’ first birthday we flew to the private island the Voss family had owned for three generations.

Alexander stood on the cliff overlooking the ocean with one boy in each arm and the wind in his silver hair.

I watched him from a short distance and felt the last of the old fear finally

leave my body.

He turned and caught me staring.

The smile he gave me was small and real and completely unguarded.

“Come here,” he said.

I walked to him.

He shifted Noah into one arm and pulled me against his side with the other.

Elias reached up and grabbed a fistful of my hair the way babies do when they are trying to understand the world.

Alexander pressed a kiss to my temple.

“I used to think the quiet was the only thing that could save me,” he murmured. “I was wrong.”

I looked up at him.

At the man who had once been a lonely former sheriff watching from across the road.

At the man who had carried a buried lab report for years because he could not stand the idea of another woman being destroyed by a lie.

At the father of my sons.

At the husband I had never expected and now could not imagine living without.

“What saved you then?” I asked.

He looked down at the two dark-haired boys in his arms, then back at me.

The answer was simple.

And it was everything.

“You.”

The ocean stretched endless and blue behind us.

The future stretched the same way in front of us.

And for the first time in longer than I could remember, I was not afraid of either.

We stood there until the sun began to drop toward the water, two broken people who had somehow made something whole, holding the proof of it between us while the light turned gold and the world, for once, stayed quiet.

THE END.
