My Ex Brought His Young Mistress to Our Son’s Party—Then My New Boyfriend Handed Him an SEC Drive
Chapter 2 / 4

Chapter 2

PART 2 - THE SECRET DOCUMENT THAT TURNED HIS MOCKERY INTO PANIC

1,335 words

Luke’s eyes darted around the patio, searching desperately for someone—anyone—who might believe him.

“This is insane,” he snapped. “You can’t prove any of that.”

Daniel’s expression didn’t change.

“I was hoping you’d say that.”

He reached into his jacket again and pulled out a thick sealed envelope.

Camellia grabbed Luke’s arm.

“Luke… what did you do?”

“Nothing!” he shouted, jerking away from her. “He’s bluffing!”

Daniel handed the envelope to me.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside were printed bank statements, transfer records, signed corporate documents, and photographs of property records from Belize.

But the final page made my blood run cold.

It wasn’t about the stolen $4.2 million.

It wasn’t even about the hidden condominium.

It was a copy of a confidential document bearing Luke’s signature—and my name.

I stared at it.

“Daniel,” I whispered. “What is this?”

For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely uneasy.

Luke saw the paper in my hands.

His face collapsed.

“No, Clover. You don’t

understand.”

Daniel stepped between us.

“She understands enough.”

Then he looked at me.

“Clover, there’s something we discovered yesterday that I haven’t told you yet.”

Luke lunged forward.

“DON’T!”

Every person at the party froze.

Daniel didn’t flinch.

“What Luke did to you during the divorce was worse than we thought.”

The document in my hand was titled CONSENT TO MARITAL ASSET WAIVER.

It stated that I had voluntarily waived any claim to a group of private equity units acquired during the final year of our marriage.

The signature at the bottom looked like mine.

Almost.

The curve in the C was right.

The slant was right.

Even the way I crossed the final letter resembled my handwriting.

But I had never seen the document in my life.

“I didn’t sign this.”

Luke rubbed both hands over his face.

“Clover, please.”

“I didn’t sign this.”

My voice came out louder.

Daniel nodded.

“We know.”

The patio seemed to tilt beneath me.

Daniel pointed to a certification block at the bottom.

“The document was notarized electronically three days after your emergency C-section.”

I stared at him.

Three days after giving birth, I had been barely able to walk from my hospital bed to the bathroom without help.

Luke had sat beside me with his laptop.

He told me he was finishing insurance forms.

I remembered the screen.

I remembered him asking me to unlock my phone because a security code had been sent.

My stomach turned.

“Oh my God.”

Luke stepped toward me.

“It wasn’t like that.”

I looked at him.

“What was it like?”

He swallowed.

“The units were complicated. They were tied to the company. I was trying to protect us.”

“Us?”

“You were exhausted. You didn’t understand the exposure.”

I laughed once.

It sounded broken.

“So you forged

my signature?”

“I didn’t forge anything.”

Daniel answered for him.

“Your digital certificate was used from Luke’s laptop. The notarization token was purchased from an account controlled by his executive assistant.”

Everyone looked at Camellia.

She went still.

“No.”

Luke turned sharply.

“Don’t say anything.”

Her face hardened.

“Don’t tell me what to say.”

Daniel continued.

“The same assistant account was used to upload the waiver into a private discovery folder forty-eight hours before Luke’s attorneys produced the financial package.”

Camellia stared at him.

“I only uploaded what he gave me.”

Luke’s head snapped toward her.

“Camellia.”

“What?” she shouted. “You said it was legal.”

The humiliation Luke had planned for me was collapsing around him.

But I barely noticed.

Because the forged waiver wasn’t just about money.

It meant he had sat beside me in a hospital room while our newborn son slept in a plastic bassinet and used my phone, my identity, and my exhaustion to steal from me.

I looked down at the date again.

Then another memory surfaced.

Luke leaving the hospital for almost four hours that afternoon.

He had said the board needed him.

When he returned, he smelled like Camellia’s perfume.

I had been too tired to register it.

Now I did.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“The equity units Luke tried to remove from the marital estate were later pledged as collateral for three shell-company loans.”

“How much?”

“Just under nine million dollars.”

A ripple of shock moved through the guests.

Luke stared at the ground.

I said, “Where did the money go?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“That’s the part we’re still tracing.”

Luke suddenly looked up.

“Enough.”

He didn’t sound smug anymore.

He sounded scared.

“This is my son’s party. You’re turning it into some spectacle.”

I stared at him in disbelief.

“You brought your mistress here to humiliate me.”

“I came to see my son.”

“You’ve seen him four times in six months.”

“That’s because you make everything difficult!”

“No,” I said. “That’s because every time the court offered you more parenting time, you said you were traveling.”

Camellia looked at him again.

“Traveling where?”

He ignored her.

Daniel glanced toward the house.

“Clover.”

Something in his tone made me turn.

Through the glass doors, I saw two men in dark suits speaking quietly to my older brother near the entrance.

One held a leather folder.

The other showed identification.

Luke saw them too.

His entire body stiffened.

“No.”

Daniel’s face remained calm.

“They’re not here to arrest you.”

Luke exhaled too quickly.

“Not today,” Daniel added.

Luke’s relief vanished.

The men stepped onto the patio.

One approached me.

“Ms. Hale?”

“Yes.”

He handed me the folder.

“You’ve been served with an emergency preservation order and notice of a supplemental hearing relating to previously undisclosed marital assets.”

Luke closed his eyes.

The second man turned toward him.

“And Mr. Hale, you are under court order not to transfer, encumber, destroy, alter, or conceal any financial record, digital account, corporate interest, real property, or cryptocurrency wallet listed in the attached schedule.”

Camellia stared at Luke.

“Cryptocurrency?”

He said nothing.

The server continued.

“The order includes the Belize property.”

Camellia’s face drained.

“My condo?”

Daniel looked at her.

“It was never legally yours.”

She turned on Luke.

“You told me it was paid for.”

“It is.”

“Whose money?”

Luke’s silence answered her.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel’s investigation team.

He read it over my shoulder.

His expression changed.

Not shock.

Recognition.

As if the last missing piece had finally clicked into place.

“What?” I asked.

Daniel looked toward Luke.

Then back at me.

“The shell-company loans weren’t used only to hide marital assets.”

My throat tightened.

“What were they used for?”

He hesitated.

Luke whispered, “Daniel, don’t.”

Daniel ignored him.

“One of the companies receiving the money was created eleven months before your son was born.”

I felt every muscle in my body go rigid.

Daniel turned the phone so I could see the company name.

Northstar Family Holdings.

The registered beneficiary was hidden behind a trust.

But beneath it was an internal bank memo.

One line had been highlighted.

Purpose of reserve: anticipated paternity-contingent settlement and executive succession protection.

I looked at Luke.

“What does paternity-contingent mean?”

Luke’s eyes filled with something I had never seen there before.

Not arrogance.

Not anger.

Panic.

Daniel answered quietly.

“It means Luke was preparing financially for the possibility that someone would challenge your son’s paternity before he was even born.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“That makes no sense.”

Daniel’s gaze stayed on Luke.

“It will.”

Luke stepped forward.

“Clover, listen to me.”

I backed away.

“Why were you preparing for a paternity fight before our son was born?”

He didn’t answer.

Camellia did.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Because he thought the baby wasn’t his.”

I turned toward her.

Luke looked as if he might collapse.

And suddenly I understood that the affair, the forged waiver, the hidden money, even the divorce might not have started where I thought they did.

They had started months earlier.

With a lie Luke had believed.

Or a lie someone had needed him to believe.
