I CAME HOME AFTER FIVE YEARS AND FOUND MY FAMILY BEGGING WHILE MY HUSBAND STOLE EVERYTHING
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

PART 1 - I CAME HOME TO FIND MY FAMILY BEGGING IN THE STREET

625 words

“Don't say Donald's name here, sweetheart!

If his men hear you, they'll take Keaton again.”

Those were the first words my mother spoke as she sat on a piece of cardboard near the entrance to the central subway station, my six-year-old son asleep in her arms. I had just returned to the city after spending five years working as a live-in caregiver in Miami. During that entire time, I had faithfully sent thirty-five thousand dollars every month to my husband so we could build our home, support my parents, and give Keaton a better life.

My name is Alisha Meyer, and until that traffic light, I truly believed every sacrifice had been worth it.

From the taxi, I had been looking through the photos Donald always sent me. My parents having breakfast in a beautiful dining room. Keaton playing in a bedroom filled with toys. A white house with a garden that, according to him, we

were almost finished paying off. He never agreed to video calls. There was always an excuse. The signal was bad. My mother got dizzy looking at screens. Keaton was already asleep. I wanted to believe him because he was my husband.

When the taxi stopped, I noticed an elderly woman holding out a plastic cup for spare change. Beside her sat a man with swollen feet, wearing the same shirt I had given my father before I left. The little boy in the woman's arms had the same birthmark behind his ear as Keaton.

I threw open the taxi door before the traffic light changed.

“Mom! Dad!”

My mother dropped the cup. Coins scattered across the sidewalk. My father burst into tears. Keaton opened his eyes, but he didn't run to me. He was too weak. His cheeks were hollow, and both of his arms were covered in scrapes.

“Where's

the house?” I asked. “Where's all the money I sent?”

They only looked around in terror. My mother begged me not to say Donald's name. She told me a man known as Big Mike watched the area and that my husband had threatened to hurt Keaton if they ever went to the police.

I took them to a modest hotel in Atlanta. I helped them bathe, ordered food, and watched them devour chicken broth and bread as if they hadn't eaten a proper meal in weeks. Then my father finally told me the truth.

Three months after I left, Donald began bringing another woman, Ashley, into our home. When my parents confronted him, he b:eat them, took away their identification documents, and threw them onto the streets with Keaton. My mother-in-law, Brenda, said the boy was nothing but a burden and would only get in the way of her son's

new life.

My parents tried to report him. Big Mike intercepted them, grabbed Keaton, and warned them that if they spoke to the authorities again, the child would suffer the consequences. From that day on, they survived by hiding wherever they could, refusing to enter shelters because they feared being separated from their grandson.

As my father finished speaking, my phone vibrated.

It was Donald.

"My love, your parents just finished dinner. Keaton is playing in his room. They're all doing great. Just keep working. We love you."

Below the message was a photograph taken that very afternoon. My parents, clean and smiling, were sitting in front of a table overflowing with food.

I slowly looked up.

They were sitting right in front of me, wearing the new clothes I had just bought them, trembling with fear.

That was when I realized the photos weren't old, and they weren't edited either.

Someone was forcing them to pose.

And I couldn't begin to imagine what I was about to uncover.
