I WAS SEVEN MONTHS PREGNANT WHEN MY HUSBAND FOUND HIS SISTER INSPECTING MY BRUISED ARM
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

PART 1 - THE FOUR MARKS JULIAN WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SEE

628 words

“Four marks,” my husband’s sister said, rolling my sleeve back down.

“Wear the navy dress tonight. The trustees can’t see them.”

Then the front door opened.

Julian stood there with his suitcase still in his hand.

He had come home eighteen hours early.

Serena’s fingers loosened around my wrist. I was still on my knees beside the wine she had spilled across the marble floor, one hand gripping a wet cloth, the other pressed beneath my seven-month belly.

Julian looked at the bucket. Then at my swollen wrist.

“What happened?”

“She slipped,” Serena said immediately. “Nora’s been clumsy lately.”

I tried to stand before he could see more. A sharp tightening crossed my stomach, and I caught the edge of the table.

Julian dropped his suitcase and reached me first.

“Nora?”

“I’m all right.”

It was the same lie I had told him on every video call during his six-week trip.

I had kept my sleeves down. I had smiled while

Serena stood outside the bedroom door listening. I had told him the baby was making me tired.

Serena folded her arms. “She’s upset because I asked her to clean up the mess she made.”

“It was your wine,” I said.

For one second, the careful expression left her face.

Julian saw it.

He also saw the paper on the kitchen counter—the medical order Serena had taken from my purse and left beneath a stack of household bills.

He read it aloud.

“Limited activity. No heavy lifting. Avoid prolonged standing due to early contractions.”

His voice dropped. “Why is my pregnant wife scrubbing the floor?”

Serena gave a small, tired laugh. “Because your pregnant wife has done nothing for six weeks except spend money and make the staff wait on her.”

“This is my home too,” I said.

“Only because you married into it.”

Julian turned to her.

“Step away from

my wife.”

Serena stared at him, but she obeyed.

He helped me into a chair, then crouched in front of me. When he pushed my sleeve higher, the fresh marks on my forearm showed beside older ones that were already fading.

His face changed.

“How did this happen?”

I looked past him at Serena.

“Ask her why I missed my appointment Tuesday.”

Julian stood.

Serena spoke before he could.

“The clinic rescheduled.”

“No,” said Maria, the household driver, from the hallway.

Serena whipped around.

Maria’s hands were trembling, but her voice held.

“You told me Mrs. Vance wasn’t allowed to leave without your permission. Then you took the keys.”

The room went still.

Serena recovered quickly.

“I was protecting her. She’s emotional, she’s careless, and she has no idea what she’s been charging to the family trust.”

She faced Julian as if I were no longer there.

“Private nurses. Medical

transportation. Home monitoring. Eighty-six thousand four hundred dollars in six weeks.”

I stared at her.

“I haven’t had a private nurse.”

Serena’s mouth tightened.

“The records don’t lie.”

Julian opened the secure trust portal on his laptop.

Twelve payments filled the screen.

NORA VANCE — PRENATAL CARE REIMBURSEMENT.

TOTAL: $86,400.

He turned the laptop toward me.

“Nora, did you receive any of this?”

“Not one dollar.”

Serena moved so fast her chair struck the wall. She reached for the laptop, but Julian pulled it away.

“She built that system,” Serena snapped. “She could have changed anything.”

That was when I understood what she had planned for the trustees that night.

The navy dress wasn’t only meant to hide the marks on my arm.

It was meant to make me look calm while she accused me of stealing.

Serena reached for the laptop again.

I covered it with one hand.

“Don’t bother,” I said.

Her face lost all color.

“The original audit left this house three days ago.”
