Chapter 3 / 4

PART 3 — The Man They Buried Was Still Alive

1,022 words

Emma stared at him.

“You’re lying.”

“I wish I were.”

Ward suddenly snapped, “Enough.”

Emma turned.

“You knew?”

Ward’s silence betrayed him.

Emma’s voice broke.

“You knew he was alive?”

Ward whispered, “Not until recently.”

Pierce said, “Thomas Carter survived.”

Emma looked as though she had forgotten how to breathe.

“How?”

Pierce continued.

“He discovered the program was being manipulated. Someone wanted his methodology buried while keeping the data. He disappeared before they could silence him permanently.”

Cole said, “Who?”

Pierce looked toward Ward.

Ward stiffened.

Emma followed Pierce’s gaze.

For one terrible second, it seemed obvious.

Colonel Ward.

The old teammate.

The man who had lied for eleven years.

Emma stepped away from him.

Ward raised both hands.

“Emma, listen.”

“Don’t call me that.”

“Your father asked me to protect you.”

She stared.

“By telling me he was dead?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ward’s voice trembled.

“Because the person hunting him was still inside the

system.”

Pierce suddenly said, “And still is.”

Cole looked around.

“Who?”

Pierce stared directly at Sergeant Ryan Cole.

The range went silent.

Cole laughed.

“You’re joking.”

Nobody laughed with him.

Emma’s eyes narrowed.

Pierce continued.

“Ryan Cole’s father was Major Stephen Cole.”

Ward added quietly, “Program security director.”

Cole’s face changed.

Emma stared at him.

“My father’s file.”

Cole shook his head.

“I don’t know anything about that.”

Pierce stepped closer.

“Your father led the internal investigation.”

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

“He classified Thomas Carter’s disappearance as a fatal training accident.”

Cole’s confidence collapsed.

“My father told me it was an accident.”

Ward said, “Then he lied to you too.”

Cole looked genuinely shaken.

Emma studied him carefully.

And suddenly she understood.

Cole’s hostility that morning had not been calculated.

It had been insecurity.

Ego.

Ignorance.

He had no idea.

Cole whispered, “My father…”

Ward finished.

“Covered it up.”

Cole

sat down hard on the concrete barrier.

For the first time all day, Sergeant Ryan Cole looked small.

Emma turned toward Pierce.

“Where is my father?”

Pierce glanced toward the access road.

A fourth vehicle had appeared.

An old pickup.

Dust rose behind it.

Emma stopped breathing.

The truck approached slowly.

It parked near the range gate.

The driver’s door opened.

A gray-haired man stepped out.

Older.

Lean.

A slight limp.

But Emma knew him before she saw his face clearly.

The way he stood.

The way his left shoulder sat slightly lower than his right.

The familiar habit of scanning the horizon before walking forward.

Emma dropped the photograph.

“Dad?”

Thomas Carter stopped.

Eleven years disappeared from Emma’s face.

She was no longer a soldier.

She was fourteen years old again, standing beside a front door, waiting for a father who never came home.

Thomas’s eyes filled.

“Em.”

Emma

walked toward him.

Then faster.

Then ran.

Thomas opened his arms.

Emma hit him so hard he staggered backward.

She gripped his uniform shirt and sobbed.

“You were alive.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You were alive!”

“I know.”

“You let me bury an empty casket!”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I know.”

She pushed him away.

Then struck his chest with both hands.

“Why?”

Thomas accepted it.

Every blow.

Every tear.

“Because they threatened you.”

Emma stopped.

Thomas looked at her.

“The people behind the program knew I had copied evidence. They told me if I surfaced, you and your mother would become leverage.”

Emma’s anger cracked into grief.

“So you disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“For eleven years.”

“Yes.”

“Why now?”

Thomas looked toward the firing range.

“Because the program finally ended.”

Ward approached.

“The last investigation closed yesterday.”

Thomas nodded.

“Files declassified internally. Arrests made. Stephen Cole’s network is gone.”

Ryan Cole stood motionless.

“My father?”

Thomas looked at him.

“Your father confessed two months ago.”

Cole’s eyes widened.

“He’s alive?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

Thomas answered softly.

“Probably for the same reason I didn’t tell Emma.”

Cole looked down.

Fear.

Shame.

Love.

Sometimes they produced the same silence.

Emma wiped her face.

Then something occurred to her.

She looked from Thomas to Pierce.

“You knew I’d be here today.”

Pierce smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

Ward looked confused.

Emma’s eyes narrowed.

“The four-hundred-meter target.”

Pierce nodded.

Emma turned toward Cole.

“You didn’t choose it?”

Cole shook his head slowly.

“I thought I did.”

Pierce laughed.

“I suggested the lane configuration to Sergeant Cole yesterday.”

Cole looked offended.

“You manipulated me?”

Pierce shrugged.

“Wasn’t difficult.”

For the first time, several people laughed.

Even Emma.

Through tears.

Thomas looked at his daughter.

“You shoot better than I did at your age.”

Emma folded her arms.

“At my age?”

Thomas smiled.

“Fine. Better than I ever did.”

She studied him.

“You were watching?”

Thomas nodded toward the ridge.

“From the observation building.”

Emma shook her head in disbelief.

“So this whole qualification…”

Ward smiled.

“…became something else.”

Thomas stepped closer.

“I wanted to know if you still remembered what I taught you.”

Emma’s eyes filled again.

“You could’ve just asked.”

“I was afraid you’d punch me.”

Emma stared at him.

“I still might.”

Thomas laughed.

“I deserve it.”

Behind them, Cole stood.

He approached Emma slowly.

His arrogance was gone.

“Carter.”

Emma looked at him.

Cole swallowed.

“What I said earlier…”

She waited.

“I was wrong.”

Emma raised an eyebrow.

“That sounded painful.”

A few soldiers laughed from the shelter.

Cole almost smiled.

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

Cole nodded.

“You embarrassed me.”

Emma’s expression softened.

“You did that yourself.”

Cole accepted it.

“Fair.”

He looked toward Thomas.

“My father hurt your family.”

Thomas shook his head.

“Your father made choices. You make yours.”

Cole absorbed that.

Then he extended his hand toward Emma.

“Good shooting.”

Emma looked at it.

Then shook it.

“Thank you, Sergeant.”

Pierce checked his watch.

“We still have a qualification to finish.”

Emma laughed.

“Seriously?”

Pierce raised both hands.

“Regulations.”

Thomas called after her.

“One more thing.”

Emma turned.

Thomas held up the old shooting token.

He tossed it.

Emma caught it.

“Keep both,” he said.

Emma looked down at the worn metal.

Then back at him.

“You’re not disappearing again.”

Thomas smiled.

“Never.”
